Owned by Christian Moueix of Chateau Petrus, Dominus is one of the New World's top Bordeaux style wines. The 1998 vintage wine is an excellent value at $4,800.

1998 was a difficult vintage but Dominus turned out one of the best red wines of the vintage. The wine has a medium-dark purple color and cassis bouquet that develops nicely in the glass. This concentrated wine offers plenty of dark berry flavors with hints of coffee. The tannins are still quite strong in this young wine so it is important to let the wine breath for at least 45 minutes before drinking. Enjoy this wine with Roast Beef, Colorado Double Cut Lamb Chops and Roasted Duck with Chestnuts. The wine also matches nicely with Beijing Duck if you go light on the plum sauce. Serve this wine at 18℃.

Dominus formerly had a reputation for producing extremely tannin wines that were difficult to drink. Since the early 1990s, new blends and a friendlier vinification process have resulted in softer, more complex wines. A very fun experience is comparing Dominus and Opus One in a side-by-side tasting. Both are top California wines that are doing a fine job at emulating the grace and complexity of the better Bordeaux wines. Dominus does very well in these tastings and is significantly less expensive.
