In 1973, Mouton-Rothschild became the only Bordeaux since the classification of 1855 to be upgraded. The wine was promoted from Second Growth to First Growth status. This is one of Bordeaux's greatest red wines famous for its power and concentration. This very robust wine boasts over 80% Cabernet Sauvignon grape content, the highest of any First Growth. The wine should be aged for at least 10 years, even more for good vintages. Surprisingly, in several excellent Bordeaux vintages (1988, 1989, 1990), this wine is merely good and not great as it should be. Mouton-Rothschild is also famous for its labels, each year since 1945 a different modern artist has been featured. Like other great red Bordeaux wines this wine is best matched with roasted lamb or beef as well as Prime Steaks without sauce.
