Generally considered the best second wine of Bordeaux, Les Forts de Latour consistently outperforms a number of Second Growth wines. At $2,800 this is a reasonably priced way to experience classic Pauillac power and elegance.
The 1998 vintage was very good, but not great in Pauillac. Les Forts de Latour still turned out an excellent wine. The wine has the classic purple-brick red color of a top young Bordeaux wine and elegant dark fruit and spice bouquet. The wine offers very concentrated flavors of blackberry, black current with hints of chocolate. The long and satisfying finish is classic Latour, only a little shorter than Chateau Latour. Match this wine with Pauillac Rack of Lamb Farcee, Sweet Breads with Morel Sauce or Roasted Rabbit in Light Mustard Sauce. Allow this wine to breathe for 30 minutes and serve at 18 ℃.
Chateau Latour has probably been the most consistent of all the great Brodeaux wines over the last 100 years. Even in bad or merely good years, Chateau Latour produces fine wines. The same is true, in a lighter version, with Les Forts de Latour. This is the best of all second wines and an excellent wine in it's own right that is comparable to a good second or third growth wine.
