At about $2,200 this is one of Brodeaux's best second wines and a lovely early preview of the beautiful 1996 Haut Brion.
If Les Forts de Latour is the greatest second wine then Bahans-Haut-Brion is the second best. When Haut Brion is the wine of the vintage, like 1989, Bahans-Haut-Brion is the best second wine of Bordeaux. The 1996 Bahans-Haut-Brion has a beautiful deep red color and spicy-exotic bouquet. The wine was aged partly in new oak and partly in year old Haut Brion barrels. This is quite apparent in the wines gentle, earthy flavors. If you want to experience some of the class and breed of the great Haut Brion but don't want to spend a lot of money, try this wine. Match this wine with Roasted Duck with Prunes, Roasted Leg of Lamb with Garlic Scent and Prime T-Bone Steak. Serve this wine at 18℃.
When Medoc was still a swamp in the early 16th Century, Haut Brion was already a famous wine. It's fair to call Haut Brion the first true grand cru of Bordeaux. Thomas Jefferson came to love the wine while serving as the American Ambassador to France (1784-1789). He visited the Haut Brion estate in 1787. The estate has changed hands many times over the centuries with various changes in quality. American banker Clarence Dillon purchased Ch. Haut-Brion in 1935 and since this time the estate has been a technology innovator in Bordeaux and turned out consistently great wines. Bahans-Haut-Brion has been produced as Haut Brion's second wine since the very early 1900s and is named after a former part owner of Chateau Haut Brion, the Bahans family.
