For about $2,700, this is an excellent value blanc de blancs vintage Champagne that's a perfect example of Pol Roger's subtle and refined style.
With the notable and historic exception, Sir Winston Churchill Cuvee, Pol Roger is known for making some of the most stylish and refined lighter bodied Champagnes. The Brut Chardonnay, 1993 exemplifies the house's emphasis on style and finesse over brute power. The Chardonnay grapes come only from Grand Cru vineyards. This brilliant light yellow Champagne has a lively bouquet with hints of lemon. The very small persistent bubbles and citrus-honey flavors are very pleasing in the mouth. The finish is quite long and refined. This Champagne is best enjoyed with light meat dishes like Pates, Terrines and Chilled Pheasant. The wine also matches nicely with Grilled Maine Lobster and Lobster Thermador. Serve this wine at 8℃.
Pol Roger was born Christmas Eve, 1831. By the time he was 18 he open the Pol Roger Champagne House. Initially, his father who was a respected lawyer introduced most of young Pol’s business. Through winemaking skills and business acumen the house grew into one of the most respected Champagne makers with clients including the Prince of Wales and the Savoy Hotel. One of the firm’s biggest fans was Winston Churchill who had a particular fondest for the1895 vintage in his youth and the 1928 vintage in his later years.
