At about $650 this is a terrific value! This very concentrated and delicious wine from Australia's most famous red wine producer competes well with more expensive wines.

The Koonunga Hill, Shiraz Cabernet, 2000 is a very fine wine and good example of the increasingly elegant Shiraz blend wines coming from Australia. The wine has a very attractive dark purple color and deliciously spicy bouquet. The wine is very concentrated and very round in the mouth. The intense spicy fruit flavors are balanced with soft tannins. This is a fairly robust wine suitable for meat dishes including Grilled Prime Steaks, Double Cut Lamb Chops and Roasted Duck. The ISACS Grapevine tasters enjoyed this wine with Whole Roasted Suckling Pig. Serve this wine slightly below room temperature, about 18℃.

In 1844, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold left England and settled in South Australia. The following year he planted the first vines believing as a Doctor that wine was good for the health. Initially, he intended to serve these wines to his patients. Since then Penfolds has become Australia's most prestigious red wine producer. The first vintage of the company's greatest wine, Grange (formerly Grange Hermitage), was harvested in 1951. Penfolds is now owned by Southcorp, Australia's largest wine company.
