The chief winemaker of Margaux, Paul Pontellier, loves to say, "We are bottling history". As one of the world's most famous and admired wines, the makers of Ch. Margaux have a right to make this claim. Since the early 17th century, this 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and Petit Verdot/Cabernet Franc wine has been one of the world's truly elegant and charming wines. Thomas Jefferson, one of Bordeaux's most famous admirers, claimed that the 1784 Ch. Margaux was the wine of the vintage. Over two centuries later, the 1986 vintage was another classic for Margaux. Paul Pontellier claims this wine is very similar to the 1961 Margaux, with a lovely balance of fullness and finesse. Bottles of the 1986 vintage wine at Ch. Margaux are still considered too young to drink. But bottles that have been shipped around the world, especially those sent to Asia through the Suez Canal, are ready for drinking now.
