Almaviva is a joint venture between Chile's largest wine producer, Concha y Toro, and Mouton Rothschild's Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The name of this wine comes from Pierre de Beaumarchais' character, the "Count of Almaviva" in his play the Marriage of Figaro, a work Wolfang Amadeus Mozart later turned into one of the most popular operas ever. We all know that labels are important to Mouton and the label of Almaviva depicts the ancient Chilean symbols of the earth and cosmos. The name Almaviva on the label is a copy of Beaumarchais' own writing. A historic name and beautiful label are nice, but it's the wine that matters. The wine, a blend of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc varieties, is recognized as one of Chile's best red wines. Almaviva comes from vines over 100 years old. Even though the 1998 vintage was only the second vintage under the Almaviva label, it was named Chile's top red wine at the nation's prestigious. Descorchados, 2001 wine competition. This is a very concentrated masculine wine that's best enjoyed with Roast Beef, Roast Leg of Lamb or Roasted Whole Suckling Pig. This wine is also a great match for a double cut, dry-aged Prime Sirloin or Ribeye Steak. Serve this wine slightly below room temperature, about 18℃.
