This wine was famous 800 years ago! In the early part of the 14th century Lafite wines were earning a reputation for refinement and elegance. In 1868 Baron James de Rothschild of the famous French-Jewish banking family bought Ch. Lafite and added his family name. With nearly 222 acres this is the largest property first growth wine. Ch. Lafite Rothschild is famous for its charm and elegance. In great years this is often the best, or among the top, of all Bordeaux red wines. This wine seldom over powers you; instead it charms you with its perfect balance and complexity. The 1986 vintage was one of the best vintages for this wine and the typical "lead" flavor that Lafite Rothschild is famous for in great years is very apparent. The perfect match for the Ch. Lafite Rothschild, 1986 is a rack or saddle of lamb. When you pare a good vintage Lafite Rothschild with tender and tasty lamb you are as close to culinary perfection as possible. When enjoying Ch. Lafite Rothschild in Taipei, I suggest you ask chef Claudio Cattarin of the Marco Polo to prepare his "Butter Confit" Rack of Lamb (the lamb is marinated in butter and herbs for six hours) or enjoy the Grilled Colorado Lamb Chops at Ruth Chris (seared at 1800℃).
