If there is ever a review or revision of the Burgundy red wine Grand Cru classifications, Clos St. Jacques is at the top of the list to be upgraded from Premier Cru Status to Grand Cru status. Top producers like Armand-Rousseau (with cellars and a winery situated in the oldest part of the village, near the 13th Century church) often turn out better Premier Cru wines than the lesser producers of the Grand Cru wines. One of the Premier Cru stars is Armand Rousseau, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos St. Jacques", 1997. The wine has a surprisingly mature red-brown color. The nose is quite open with a lovely offering of dark fruit and minerals. In the mouth, the wine is powerful and intense with excellent delicacy and balance. Dark fruit and cassis flavors dominant the remarkably complex wine. This wine offers drinkers the chance to experience deliciously mature Burgundy. The wine is definitely ready for drinking now and should remain at its peak for a decade. Enjoy this wine with refined meat dishes including Bresse Chicken in Supreme Sauce and Morels; Sweetbreads in Dijon Mustard Sauce and Whole Roasted Sirloin Scented with
