Often referred to as the "Poor Man's Grange", this $1,250 wine is one of the best ways to taste real class at an affordable price.
His Cabernet Shiraz blend is the best mid-priced Penfolds red wine. It is smoother and more elegant than the Bin 407, a pure Cabernet Sauvignon wine. This wine is yet another manifestation of the blending skills of Australia's winemakers. The 1999 vintage Bin 389 is a concentrated, brick red colored wine with an elegant, spicy bouquet. The wine is full of refined berry and plum flavors. Aged 13 months in American oak (78% second year Grange oak & 22% new American oak) this wine is quite round and soft on the palate. The wine's finish is quite long. Enjoy this excellent wine with Roasted Leg of Lamb, Rack of Lamb or Roast Beef. Serve this wine at 18 ℃.
In 1844, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold left England and settled in South Australia. The following year he planted the first vines believing as a Doctor that wine was good for the health. Initially, he intended to serve these wines to his patients. Since then Penfolds has become Australia's most prestigious red wine producer. The first vintage of the company's greatest wine, Grange (formerly Grange Hermitage), was harvested in 1951. Penfolds is now owned by Southcorp, Australia's largest wine company.
