The second wine of the great Chateau Leoville Las Cases (one of the best wines in the 1998 vintage), Clos du Marquis is one of Bordeaux's top second wines and an excellent value at about $1,600.
Over the past 50 years, Chateau Leoville Las Cases has been producing wines of First Growth quality. The exceptionally high standards of this chateau are apparent in its second wine. The 1998 Clos du Marquis is a dark red wine with a heady bouquet of dark fruit and spices. The elegant black berry, cassis and chocolate flavors are balanced with well-structured tannins. This wine is very well balanced. The lighter style of this second wine make it drinkable now while the 1998 Leoville Las Cases still needs time to age and shed its hefty tannins. Enjoy this wine with Prime Steaks, Roast Beef and Rack of Lamb. This wine also matches nicely with Teppanyaki style U.S. and Japanese Steaks. Serve this wine at 18 ℃.
Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Medoc. In 1855 it was classified as a Second Growth, however, most wine connoisseurs view this wine as an equal to the Frist Growth wines. The neighboring Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Barton chateaus were once part of the same large estate. Today, Leoville Las Cases comprises over 209 acres and since 1950 has been owned and managed by the Delon Family.
