This dark and forceful $1,680 red wine from the Madiran region is a good example of a very fine individualistic wine from a lesser-known region. It's a big, macho wine.
The Madiran region borders the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France. The most popular red wine grape is the Tannat known for making deep, dark and concentrated wines. Alain Brumont's Chateau Montus is one of the best wines from this intriguing wine region. The wine has a dark purple-red color and a spicy mocha bouquet. This rich wine has an abundance of black cherries and dark berries flavors and a solid tannic finish. This is an excellent wine to match with game or full-flavored meats including Ox Tongue, Confit Duck or Goose, Roasted Wild Boar and French Style Pigeon with Baby Peas Stew. The wine also pairs well with Chinese style Roasted Pigeon and Taiwanese Grilled Pheasant. Serve this wine at 18 ℃.
Vines for wines have been cultivated in the Madiran region for over 2,000 years. In the 11th century monks from Burgundy started planting the powerful Tannat variety that is very appropriate for the hot climate. In 1948 the region was awarded Appellation status and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc varieties were introduced to soften the sometimes excessively tannic Tannat wines. Alain Brumont is one of the most respected Madiran producers.
