On the western edge of Alexander Valley in Sonoma County is Geyserville vineyard, the first vineyard of Ridge Vineyards. The old vines in this vineyard help make the wines complex and intriguing. 106-year-old Zinfandel vines comprise the largest part of the vineyard and share space with 116-year-old mixed blacks and 106-year-old Carignane vines. A smaller planting of 35-year-old Zinfandel and 16-year-old Petit Sirah are also resident. Each year the exact blending of these grapes varies but the result is almost always one of California's top Zinfandel blend wines. The 1996 wine has a very dark purple red color and peppery spice bouquet. On the palate the wine opens up into a symphony of ripe black cherry, blueberry and coffee flavors. This is a robust (14.2% alcohol) yet elegantly balanced red wine with a very long and satisfying spicy finish. Serve this wine 18 C°.
