Well before I made an appearance on this earth, this chateau was already a famous under performer. For much of the last century Chateau d’Issan produced light and diluted wines. Despite having one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful chateaus ensconced by a moat and historic terroir, this wine has been consistently disappointing. Thus, wine drinkers were quite surprised over the past few vintages as this wine showed significant progress. Young winemaker Emmanual Cruse has made a name for himself helping to turn around this chateau. Recent vintages have been more concentrated and balanced. The 1999 wine has a brooding dark red color and spicy nose. The wine has abundant dark berry, tobacco and chocolate flavors and an impressively long finish. Match this wine with Pressed Duck, Roasted Leg of Lamb and Prime Rib. Serve this wine at 18 C.
