The 1998 wine is not as grand as the great 1997 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet, but its still excellent and a much better value; the wine has a dark purple color, berry and spices scents and a lovely combination of ripe berries, smoked cedar and chocolate flavors; full and round in the mouth, the wine has a nice toasty finish; match with roasted turkey or hearty meat stews; Alfred Tubbs founded Chateau Montelena in 1882, but the exceptional reputation of this wine started in 1972 when the new owner, Jim Barrett, replanted the vineyards and made substantial investments in winemaking.
