Since 1962, Vat 9 has been the flagship of Tyrrell's Shiraz wines; the 1998 vintage in the Hunter Valley was excellent as manifested by this New World style Shiraz wine; the wine has a very dark purple-red color, spicy dark berry nose and concentrated, almost sweet, flavors of dark berries and black cherry; this is a smooth wine with round tannins and a good typically Australian Shiraz spicy-oaky finish; match with BBQ meats as well as moderately spicy Chinese and other Asian meat dishes; Edward Tyrrell first planted vines in 1858; still family owned, Tyrrell's has grown into one of the biggest Australian producers with an extensive portfolio of wines.
