Over the past 50 years Chateau Haut Brion has been the best value First Growth wine. Available for approximately $8,000, the exquisite 1996 Haut Brion is a classically styled Haut Brion.
In excellent vintages, many Bordeaux wine lovers consider Haut Brion the most balanced and subtle of Bordeaux red wines. It is one of the world's truly great wines. The 1996 vintage wine is a dark-brick red colored wine with a heady and elegant bouquet. The wine is medium to full-bodied with cassis, cherry and vanilla flavors. The tannins are still strong, yet soft enough to allow the wine to be drinkable now. The wine will benefit from a few years of cellaring and will continue to develop for decades. If you drink it now, it's best to decant the wine at least 90 minutes before drinking. The finish of the wine is very long and complex. Overall, this is a super wine. Match this wine with Rack of Lamb Farcee, Prime Dry-Aged Sirloin Steak and Goose Confit. Serve this wine at 18 ℃.
When Medoc was still a swamp in the early 16th Century, Ch. Haut Brion was already a famous wine. It's fair to call Haut Brion the first true grand cru of Bordeaux. Thomas Jefferson came to love the wine while serving as the American Ambassador to France (1784-1789). He visited the Haut Brion estate in 1787. The estate has changed hands many times over the centuries with various changes in quality. American banker Clarence Dillon purchased Ch. Haut-Brion in 1935 and since this time the estate has been a technology innovator in Bordeaux and turned out consistently great wines.
